Horus Heresy 3rd Edition: Saturnine Pre-Order Next Weekend 12/July/2025

It is official. The pre-order drops next Saturday, 12/July/2025. This is not a drill folks - it is here, and ahead of when I estimated it would be, but still in July!

As announced on the Sunday preview, the Saturnine boxed set and the new rule books for the third edition of Horus Heresy arrives next Saturday, 12/July/2025.

This will make things challenging for me as I've already made plans for next weekend! lol! Wish me luck - I hope I can get online and in the queue for this regardless.

My hype train has no brakes right now.

So here are my final thoughts based upon we know so far. I’m going to give praise before I make criticisms.

I like the way that melee weapon profiles have been updated, just like giving AP to melee weapons in the 4th edition ( I think) this looks to be good.
I’m sort of sold on the way armies are built, the age of darkness is NOT the 42nd (now) millennium whilst there was a standardization of sorts in the Principia Bellocosia most legions deviated from it and you even had specialised companies e.g. the Nemesis Chapter of the Ultramarines who had more Destroyer squads than was the norm.

My only concern is how the choices you make shape the options available to you and if the restrictions they impose (for the sake of balance), e.g. the old rites of war gave the options of more heavy metal, but they came with restrictions that severely limited your options in other areas.

I also think you could’ve achieved the same results by tweaking instead of ditching the Force Organization chart. In the 2nd edition we had dreadnought Talons and Vehicle / Artillery Squadrons which enabled you to take more vehicles in higher value games without limiting your choices.

I’d have done the same for the Consuls e.g. you could take 3 consols per slot and they were treated as independent characters for the purposes of play.

I’d also have enabled people to take more than (for example) 4 elite choices, but for each choice over the original limit you had to take an additional 2 troop selections.

I’m concerned over the new characteristics and status’s, I came into the game 23 years ago in 3rd edition but even older hands such as yourself have told stories and how these characteristics complicated the game, coupled with the new status’s I think the complications these additions are (I suspect) the reason that they’ve eliminated the random game turn ends. Also, as you’ve said previously these statuses were more than taken care of under Leadership and Pinned. Also how often are we going to be using these characteristics? I get how tech Priests in 7th edition (last one I played) could repair vehicles but how often is the average Marine going to use intelligence?

Likewise, how is the fixed game turn endings going to interact with reserves? In 2nd edition there is risk in taking reserves as the more likely that they’ll show up, the more likely the game will (randomly) end.

I also disagree with the new way ranged weapons are used specifically bolters and heavy weapons. With bolters you could move and shoot 12’, stay still and shoot 24’ or twice at 12’. That meant that you had to think about the how to use / deploy a Tactical squad. Likewise with heavy weapons, I think that snap shots (again I think that came in at 4th edition) was a great way to get you to think about how you used / deployed a dedicated heavy weapons squad (esp as in HH you equip EVERYONE with those weapons, not a maximum of four in a devastator squad.

In short (and there are a few more things I could go into like reintroducing the glancing hits chart) from what we’ve seen thus far they’ve made the game more complicated in certain respects) whilst at the same time taken out quite a bit of the randomness and skill that it took to play the game to its fullest potential.

I'll probably pick up a box of the new tactical marines at launch, but I'll reserve judgement until I've seen more of how the rules interact.

I think my views are very well aligned to your own!

There's even more leaks that I'm seeing being linked to me by contacts and friends. Some look really promising, but others I am holding my breath on until I see the full picture. We will all find out soon enough I suppose!

yeah I'm also hearing that entire unit types have been airbrushed out e.g. destroyers and that changes have been made to others (such as terminators) that would make most army's illegal.

Second edition wasn't perfect, there were changes that severely nerfed flyers and other legion specific units e.g. dark angels intemporers. But this wholesale re-writing of the rules wasn't needed or asked for.

My (fleeting) hope is that GW will listen and address these issues. I will continue to play 2nd edition for now.

I am really worried and concerned what they have done to unit options if the (seemingly entirely correct leaks) are true.

The hashtag of IllegalArmiesOnParade is gaining traction!
