Counters from 5th ed. Release

When the 5th edition rules came out, I bought the set of luminous green plastic counters to go with them. I liked the idea of being able to unambiguously keep track of which vehicles were shaken, immobile and wrecked (etc.).

In truth, it took me a over a month to remove them from their frames. And today, I only use them sparingly. If I were to rank them in order of most frequent use, it would probably look something like this:

1 Objective Marker;
2 Turn Marker;
3 Weapon Destroyed;
4 Smoke Launched;
5 Immobile.

If there is one item that I don't ever use, it seems to be the "run" counters.

However, I have found that they come to be extremely useful in Apocalypse games - they really do help to keep track of everything when all mayhem is breaking loose!
Does anyone else have similar experiences?

  1. Yes indeedy.

    I call them 'gimmick counters', as my mates and I all thought: 'Well here is another useless GW gimmick we will never use'.

    However, I do find my self using them quite a lot to be honest. You are right though, certain ones just get ignored. I easily use the objective flags the most, followed by the vehicle damage results (and smoke) and the 'wound' skulls. The ones like run and go to ground do just get left.

    Though after what you have said, I will probably keep them for apocalypse now :)

  3. I bought a pack knowing I wasn't going to use all of them. Like the vehicle destroyed counters, I bought the GF9 Fire markers for that, but there are still a lot of really useful ones. The wound counters (skulls) are fantastic, I use them the most. Objective flags, smoke, weapon destroyed. The vehicle shaken and stunned markers come in handy as well as the falling back arrow(s). Some are better for Apocalypse yes, but this set wasn't meant for 40K only. Not to mention they are nice to have around just in case.
